Our Heritage

History of San Jose City

From Kabaritan to a City

Before the city was founded by the Spanish colonizers, it was known as Kabaritan, named after the plant "barit" that grew abundantly in the area. Originally a part of the town of Puncan, and later Lupao, San Jose eventually became an independent municipality.

Because of its strategic location and vast agricultural plains, San Jose evolved into the agricultural, commercial, and industrial center of northern Nueva Ecija. On August 10, 1969, San Jose was converted into a city through Republic Act 6051, officially earning its place as the "Rice Granary of Nueva Ecija."

Historical Milestones

  • March 19, 1894 San Jose became an independent municipality.
  • 1969 Republic Act 6051 was signed, converting the municipality into San Jose City.
  • Present Day A booming agro-industrial center and home of the spectacular Pagibang Damara Festival.
